Media Report for the Symposium: “Future of the Interim Government and Challenges of the Coming Stage”
The different revolutionary and Syrian opposition forces have relayed the news of the changes affecting the Syrian interim government due to the number of candidates to succeed its president, who recently resigned, within reports which described the interim government as being symbolic and supervisory. This is considering the local councils and directorates working independently of it to a degree and the inability of the government to coordinate the relationship between financiers and the local councils, in addition to its complete lack of success throughout the previous years to build a clear military structure. Moreover, its weak international legitimacy has led to discussion on the seriousness of these claimed changes and their effect on the future of the coming interim government.
With the aim of researching the role of the interim government and the most prominent challenges and obstacles it faces in addition to the different questions relating to it and its future, the Syrian Dialogue center, in participation with the Civilians for Justice and Peace organization held the “Future of the Interim Government and Challenges of the Coming Stage” symposium. It was held on Thursday, Shaban 6 1440/ April 11 2019 in the city of Gaziantep with the attendance of number of politicians and active members of the Syrian revolutionary and opposition forces.
The seminar discussed in its first axis the legitimacy of the interim government and the international and regional context. In the second axis, it researched the government’s management of service projects and its relationship with local councils and governorates and judiciary in Syria. It concluded in the third axis with the defense ministry and its relationship with the factions and national army.
The discussion was pervaded in all three axes with detailed discussion on the reasons mentioned previously for the interim government’s weakness and its inability to play the roles expected of it, as they also researched all the possible solutions to empower and strengthen the interim government’s role.
