Media report on the panel discussion “The future of the Syrian North: Security Developments and their Impact on Governance”, conducted in cooperation with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies “ORSAM”
The liberated areas in Northern Syria (Idlib, the Euphrates Shield, the Oliver Branch and Peace Spring areas) have all witnessed several developments recently, especially after the Moscow agreement reached on March 5, which stipulated an end to the escalation in the area.
In Idlib, the presence of extremist groups continues to be a source of concern, and a new operations room has been formed with the participation of some of these groups under the name “Fathbatu” or “Persist” in English. Clashes erupted between the new operations room and “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham “. In parallel, the decline in the economic situation of the area following the collapse of the Syrian currency has raised the community’s concerns regarding the area’s administrative, economic and security future, in addition to their uncertainly about the fate of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham “.
In the Euphrates Shield and the Olive Branch areas, issues of governance and the security situation amid weapons proliferation, in addition to the role of local councils and their representation of the population are the dominating concerns. Hence, it is key that these issues are discussed with the aim of reaching recommendations that would contribute to preventing extremist and terrorist forces from investing the situation to destabilize those areas following their liberation.
With the aim of discussing the most important aspects of the issues listed above and discussing ways to enhance governance in the light of current developments, the Syrian Dialogue Center, in cooperation with the Center for Middle East Studies (ORSAM), held a panel discussion entitled: “The Future of the Syrian North: Security Developments and their Impact on Governance” on Thursday 4 of Dhu al-Qadah1441 AH, corresponding to 25 June 2020, which was attended by a number of representatives of the forces of the Revolution and the political and military Opposition, in addition to a number of researchers, activists, and actors in the Syrian issue.
