The media report of the focus group discussion “Economic Implications of the COVID-19 Crisis on Syrian Refugees in Turkey”
The spread of the COVID-19 virus across the world has constituted an emergency health pandemic that concerned the whole world and mobilized its governments. However, this spread carries alongside its health threats, economic repercussions that are emerging in all countries of the world, including Turkey, which has taken measures and decisions to address the economic effects of the pandemic.
In this context, the Syrians in Turkey seem to be the weakest link in the equation for various reasons, including the lack of a clear official body that is mandated and capable of helping them out, in addition to the fact that most of them do not have work permits and guarantees that would protect their rights. For them, stopping work means that they will no longer be able to provide for their family needs.
With a view to discussing these issues, the Syrian Dialogue Center conducted a focus group discussion (FGD) entitled: “The Economic Implications of the COVID-19 Crisis on Syrian Refugees in Turkey” on Sunday, Sha`ban 19, 1441 AH, corresponding to 12 April 2020 AD.
The FGD aimed at examining the economic implications and effects of the COVID-19 crisis on the conditions of the Syrian refugees in Turkey. In its first part, the FGD discussed the measures that have been taken so far to help families in need in Turkey by government agencies and NGOs and reviewed the volume of aid required to overcome this crisis.
Then, in its second part, the FGD moved to discuss symbiotic solutions through which the Syrians could overcome the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 crisis, in light of the expected decline in aid, exploring ways to ensure continuity of aid. In its final part, the FGD discussed the role of civil organizations and businessmen in this ordeal in addition to the role of international organizations supporting refugees.
