Analytical paper Summary: “Iranian-Affiliated Militias in Syria (2) … Roles and Areas of Influence”

In the Syrian Dialogue Center’s second publication in the three-part “Iranian-affiliated Militias in Syria” series, the paper entitled “Iranian-affiliated Militias in Syria: Roles and Areas of Influence” aims to understand the roles which these militias have played throughout the previous years and follows the transformations these roles have undergone as they move from military functions to economic and social domination.

This paper comes after the preliminary report “Iranian-affiliated Militias in Syria: Categorization, Dependency and Factors of Mobilization”, which the center has previously published among the series, where it aimed to demonstrate the structure of the foreign militias from outside Syria Iran uses and the local militias Iran has recruited, as well as shedding light on the means and roles by which Iran was able to mobilize the numbers of people. However, the final paper in the series “Iranian-affiliated Militias in Syria: Their Future and Regional Influence” will discusses the local and regional future of those militias, and the influence their existence will have on neighboring countries and countries interests in the Syrian issue.

This Paper will Discuss:

  • The most important battles which Iranian-affiliated forces have fought in in Syria, illustrating the importance of those battles and the military strategies they followed, in addition to clarifying the regions where Iran-affiliated military-bases have spread to and the human losses they have suffered.
  • The non-combat roles which these militias have practiced, which manifested in divides in Syrian society along religious, sectarian, social and economic lines.
  • The characteristics of internal conflicts between Iranian-affiliated militias, which may threaten the internal structure and relationship of these militias.
